Galway Runner Commemorates Life-Saving Heart Transplant at Dublin Marathon

This Sunday, Galway native Ernesto Antonio will run the Dublin City Marathon, marking a remarkable milestone: the 25th anniversary of his life-saving heart transplant. Over two decades after being given just 15 hours to live, Ernesto is not only celebrating his second chance at life but is also raising awareness for the Irish Kidney Association while honoring the legacy of his heart donor.

A Journey of Resilience and Triumph

At the age of 36, Ernesto’s life took a drastic turn when he was diagnosed with a severe heart condition requiring an urgent transplant in 1999. Given the critical nature of his illness, doctors informed him that he had only hours left. Yet, against all odds, Ernesto received a heart that would become a symbol of hope and resilience. Since that day, he has dedicated his life to pushing his physical boundaries and inspiring others.

Known for his exceptional athleticism, Ernesto broke a world record for heart transplant recipients during the 2009 Dublin City Marathon, finishing the race in an impressive 3 hours and 45 minutes. In 2014, he again participated in the Dublin run to commemorate the 15th anniversary of his transplant, highlighting his enduring spirit and commitment to living life to the fullest.

Embracing a Slower Pace for a Greater Cause

This year, Ernesto plans to adopt a more leisurely pace for the marathon. “I’ll be embracing a considerably slower pace in the Marathon – but every step I take will be for my heart donor. I will be proudly wearing my IKA running shirt featuring the message #InMemoryOfMyDonor,” he stated. This change reflects not only the passage of time but also the importance of raising funds and awareness for an organization that supports individuals facing kidney and organ transplant challenges.

While his athletic achievements are impressive, Ernesto regards his greatest accomplishment as a personal one. After the heartbreaking passing of his wife, Kate, due to breast cancer in 2016, he recognizes that true success lies in the relationships and love we cultivate. “My greatest achievement isn’t measured in medals or miles. It was being there to care for my wife throughout her struggles. Because of my heart donor, I’ve been able to watch my daughter Isabella grow into a wonderful woman, just like her mother. Everything else pales in comparison,” he reflects.

Inspiring Others Through Advocacy

Ernesto’s journey underscores the critical importance of organ donation and the profound impact it has on recipients and their families. As he prepares for the marathon, he hopes that sharing his story will encourage others to consider becoming organ donors. His participation in the Dublin City Marathon serves as a powerful reminder that every organ donor can change lives forever.

"By running and sharing my story, I want to illustrate how vital it is to support organizations like the Irish Kidney Association, as they play a pivotal role in aiding countless individuals and families dealing with kidney-related health issues,” he emphasizes.

As Ernesto prepares for the marathon, he remains focused on his mission of honoring his donor, raising awareness, and advocating for organ donation.
