Gallop through the city and on the highway

On Thursday, a horse ran away from its owner while riding in Arheilgen and chased through Darmstadt. Drivers parked their vehicles across to stop the animal.

After the first easing last week, the police’s balance for the Whitsun weekend is positive. What that means for the future prospects of Mainz easing.

Darmstadt – A horse ran away from its owner on Thursday evening while running in Arheilgen and galloped towards Darmstadt city center without being checked. That’s what the police say.

It was a total of twelve minutes, from 7:34 p.m. to 7:46 p.m., during which the police literally held their breath and hoped nothing would happen: the horse had evaded its owner’s guidance while running on the bridle and was running out of control on main roads from the Darmstadt district of Arheilgen Direction Darmstadt city center.

The wild gallop went on Frankfurter Landstrasse past Merck to Willy-Brandt-Platz in the city center and from there on in a westerly direction on a busy street towards the main train station.

Run ends on the highway

But that’s not all: It continued its fast run over the B26 onto the Autobahn 672 in the direction of Griesheim. Now, according to the police, there was an acute danger that it could go to the A5 via one of the junctions. Indeed, this is what happened. The horse chased down the ramp to the A5 in a southerly direction. Here the chase came to a happy end.

Road users parked their vehicles sideways and an occupant grabbed the horse by its bridle. Immediately afterwards a patrol from the Darmstadt autobahn police arrived and took over the two-year-old “Arab” who, according to the colleagues who were deployed, was completely exhausted but only slightly injured on his hooves. The owner of the horse was directed to her horse by telephone. During the journey she organized a vehicle with a horse trailer. At 8:40 p.m. the horse was loaded and all barriers lifted.

Seven police cars were involved

Seven patrol cars were involved in this operation. The emergency call center received 36 emergency calls, which were very useful in this case because the callers were able to provide their current location. Incidentally, the horse covered almost 10 km in these 12 minutes, from which an average speed of more than 40 kilometers per hour can be calculated.

The police say they are very fortunate that no one has apparently been injured and that the horse could be stopped before reaching the A5.
