CHICAGO (AP) — Zac Gallen pitched five solid innings, Daulton Varsho homered and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Chicago Cubs 3-1 Thursday night to snap a six-game losing streak.
Gallen (3-0) allowed one run and two hits to continue his excellent start to the season. The right-hander walked three and hit a pitch, but resolved a quagmire in his final inning.
This is how he scored his first win, in his fourth career start against Chicago.
After ending 2021 with a career-worst 4.30 ERA, Gallen has allowed two runs or fewer in his first seven starts this year.
The Cubs got Marcus Stroman back, who was on the COVID-19 list. However, they went 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position and left nine men gasping on the trails.
Brazilian Yan Gomes doubled off Willson Contreras in the fourth for Chicago’s only run.
Stroman (1-4) gave up three runs — two earned — and five hits in five innings. He dished out six strikeouts and didn’t give away walks.
For the Diamondbacks, the Dominicans Ketel Marte 4-1 with a run scored, Geraldo Perdomo 2-0. Venezuelan David Peralta 4-2 with an RBI.
For the Cubs, Venezuelans Rafael Ortega 3-0, Ildemaro Vargas 1-0, Contreras 2-0 with a run scored. The Mexican Alfonso Rivas 1-0.
