The general director of Foreign Relations and with the European Union, Jesús Gamallo, represented the Xunta in the Forum between the European Union and Latin America and the Caribbean held this week in Brussels. Galician participation focused on collaboration in the educational field.

This forum, framed in the summit between the EU and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac) next week, included the participation of youth, representatives of civil society and local and regional authorities. The meetings served to deepen the role of these actors in cooperation between Europe and Latin America and the Caribbean. The conclusions reached will be transferred to the summit of European and Latin American leaders.

Galicia took part in the debate on education and capacity building. Jesús Gamallo explained the international cooperation of our community with the current V Master Plan for Galician Cooperation 2023-2026. It is The plan identifies strategic areas in the promotion of education as a basic right and in the field of Education for Development and Global Citizenship, in line with the objectives of the 2030 Agenda.

Gamallo also recalled the conclusions of the II EU-CELAC Academic and Knowledge Summit held in Santiago de Compostela, referring especially to the importance of creating a Euro-Latin American and Caribbean space for Higher Education, Science, Technology and Innovation as a lever for development. economic. In addition, he advocated the exchange of experiences and good practices that favor academic mobility, as is the case with the IACOBUS program between Galicia and the North of Portugal.

The director general highlighted in his speech Galicia’s experience in cooperation projects in the field of education. Along these lines, he pointed out the importance of closer rapprochement in all areas between the EU and Latin America: “We cannot miss this opportunity and we have to lay the foundations for permanent cooperation to go beyond the period of the Presidency Spanish,” he said.
