As a result of the confirmation of the circulation in the south of Galicia of the bluetongue virus on February 17, 2023, the vaccination campaign and control and eradication measures for this disease were activated in Galicia. From the Labrego Union they point out that “there are several” farms that were affected with relevant incidents in vaccinated cattle, both deaths and problems in the pregnant cycle, cases of abortions or infertility.
The agrarian organization has contacted the Department of Rural Affairs to request a meeting with the person responsible for the animal vaccination area in order to specify the degree of incidents and face a possible solution to this problem.
In addition to the damages derived from the economic losses associated with these cases detected in the vaccinated cattle herd, the Union points out that the farms are especially concerned about the persistence of adverse reactions to the vaccine, already reported previously, recognized by the Administration itself, and that motivated a modification in the vaccination guidelines, which became voluntary in 2011.
It should be remembered that the first cases of this disease in Galicia were detected in the A Mariña area in 2008, and since the start of the vaccination campaigns the livestock sector at the level of the entire State He warned of the negative consequences that this inoculation was causing in the animals.
The SLG recalls that it has denounced this situation since its inception, holding in 2010 a meeting with the General Director of Livestock to demand urgent action by the Administration and encouraging farms to report this problem. In January 2011 the vaccine is no longer mandatory for all farms. Today the vaccine is mandatory in areas where cases of bluetongue are detected.
