Hamm – The financially ailing department store giant Galeria Karstadt Kaufhof shocked employees, customers and city administrations in March with its plans to cut 52 locations nationwide. The list has gotten shorter recently. Surprisingly, three more branches were saved in one fell swoop – including a very large one in North Rhine-Westphalia.

People in Dortmund, Bremen and Regensburg-Neupfarrplatz will continue to be able to shop at Galeria Karstadt Kaufhof in the future. These locations will continue after the Group and the landlords have reached an agreement.
A short time after the employees in Dortmund found out about the unexpected rescue on Thursday (May 25), notes hung on the front doors of the huge branch between Dortmund’s Westenhellweg shopping street and the central Hansaplatz. It said: “Hello Dortmund! Good news! We will remain your number one shopping address in the future. We look forward to continuing to be there for you!” Signed: “Your Galeria team Dortmund”. Many of the 160 employees had already been dismissed in April.

Galeria Karstadt Kaufhof in Dortmund: Important location saved for the second time
According to the original plans, the former Karstadt in Dortmund was to be closed on January 31, 2024. The former Kaufhof location, also on Westenhellweg, had already come to an end in the 2020 wave of closures. Even then, the second location – which has now been saved again – was to be closed.
Exactly how things will continue there will certainly be the subject of discussions. Thomas Schäfer from the retail association said in an initial reaction: “Just continuing as before cannot be a solution.”

The joy in Dortmund, Bremen and Regensburg should not hide the fact that there are still 41 Galeria Karstadt Kaufhof locations nationwide, including 14 from NRW, on the list of closures (as of May 26):
