Galeno currently holds a unique status in the FC Porto squad. He is the only player to have won the Portuguese Cup with the two finalists this season. The first was for SC Braga in the 2020/2021 season, then against Benfica, at Estádio Cidade de Coimbra, with the Minho warriors, guided at the time by Carlos Carvalhal – current coach of the Galician Celta de Vigo -, beating the team da Luz by 2-0, with the goals being scored by Lucas Piazon and the inevitable Ricardo Horta.
The FC Porto winger, who completes the 300th game of his career at Estádio do Jamor, played the whole game against the reds and was always very active in attack, putting Benfica’s trio of centre-backs in the game, made up of Jan Vertonghen, Otamendi and Morato. The 25-year-old Luso-Brazilian had a remarkable season, which meant that midway through the next season, in January 2022, he returned to FC Porto through the big door to Dragão to add potential to the attack of the blue and whites.
And, it should be said, last season Galeno helped FC Porto a lot in winning the double, with disconcerting football, taking advantage of his main weapon (speed) to make a dent in the defense of opponents that came his way.
Last season, in the Portuguese Cup final played at Estádio do Jamor, FC Porto overcame the already relegated Tondela, by 3-1. Galeno didn’t start, but came on in the second half in time to help FC Porto reach the second most important competition on the national calendar, in a season that was a dream for the blue and white hosts.
Barring anything imponderable, Galeno should start against his previous team, which he has good memories of this season, as he closed the scoring of the rout imposed on the Minho warriors (4-1) at Estádio do Dragão, in the first round of the championship.
ENGLAND CALL HIM
The summer transfer market is fast approaching and Galeno is a name that has been considered by some Premier League emblems. The fact of having dual nationality (Brazilian and Portuguese) can be an open door to the English championship, always attractive from a sporting point of view and, of course, economic for the player.
There have even been approaches with the blue and white SAD in order to know the conditions for acquiring the player’s economic rights, even with a proposal of 30 million on the table, but Pinto da Costa and his peers from the SAD administration have already said who only let the Luso-Brazilian out for the value of the termination clause, set at 50 million euros.
Despite qualifying for the group stage of the next edition of the Champions League, due to second place in the championship, FC Porto will be forced to sell some of its assets and in that batch appear the names of Galeno, Diogo Costa, Pepê and also Taremi. The departures will, of course, depend on what the market laws dictate, but it is understood that there will be considerable losses in the squad guided by Sérgio Conceição and Galeno could be just one of them.
