Galaxy Watch 4 optical blood glucose test avoids the pain of “finger” blood test

After the introduction of ECG and blood pressure monitoring, the next health monitoring function to appear in smart watches will be non-invasive blood glucose index detection. South Korean media ETNews recently reported that Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 or Galaxy Watch Active 3 will be the first smartwatches with glycemic index detection.

In order to track the blood glucose index, many diabetics need to “pinch their fingers” several times a day to read blood glucose levels in an invasive manner. Samsung collaborated with the MIT team to develop Raman Spectroscopy technology, which uses laser light scattering to measure blood glucose levels, and published an article in the scientific journal Science Advance in January last year.

Raman spectroscopy technology has been verified and has extremely high accuracy, and Samsung intends to introduce it to the next generation of Galaxy Watch smart watches. ETNews pointed out that Apple also intends to introduce the same technology in Apple Watch Series 7 instead of using non-invasive methods to monitor the glycemic index. The report believes that certification by regulatory agencies such as the US Food and Drug Administration will take time or slow the introduction of new features.
