Galaxy tri-fold rumors – 3 things we want to see

  • Korean news report suggests Samsung is working on a tri-fold phone
  • This rumor follows others reporting new foldable phone models from the tech giant
  • No foldable phones from Samsung have been confirmed yet

Samsung still appears to be in the race to become the first smartphone maker to bring a tri-fold phone to the global market, according to a new rumor.

As the snippet points out, a tri-fold phone here means a “double-hinged foldable phone”, similar to the Huawei Mate XT, which splits into three segments using two hinges. The Huawei Mate XT, reserved for the Chinese market and lacking access to Google applications and services, is unlikely to make more than a simple conceptual appearance in the rest of the world. This leaves Samsung with the opportunity to establish itself and potentially dominate the tri-fold device market elsewhere.

Here are three expectations regarding a tri-fold model from Samsung:

Less visible creases

Samsung’s excellent build quality is renowned, especially in the foldable phone market, but the creases in its screens are more noticeable than those of competitors like the OnePlus Open.

It’s far from being prohibitive, especially when the screen is divided for multitasking. However, two visible creases on a large 10- or 11-inch screen would likely diminish the feeling of size and make the screen appear more segmented than continuous.

Top quality cameras

Samsung’s Z Fold series doesn’t yet feature a camera system that matches – or even really comes close to – that of the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra phone.

We expect any Samsung tri-fold device to be ridiculously expensive at launch, and we hope a high price will allow Samsung to equip the phone with the best specs – including a camera system that comes close of the quality of a flagship product.

Some physical space constraints prevent foldable devices from having the same camera power as flat-screen phones, but the 200MP camera affixed to the Asia-exclusive Samsung Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition shows that Samsung finds workarounds.

Flexible software

Samsung has always been more flexible than Apple with its devices – its Galaxy phones can be used as desktop devices thanks to the DeX system, and its S Tab line of tablets are generally marketed as laptops rather than desktops. mobile devices.

The prospect of a tablet-sized device in your pocket becomes even more exciting in Samsung’s hands because of this flexibility.

We hope the potential Galaxy tri-fold will come with a full keyboard and mouse, the S Pen, and DeX support at launch, which would move the concept of a tri-fold from “very large phone” to “station hyper-portable work”.

Previous rumors about the Galaxy triple

These latest rumors come in line with recent reports that Samsung is exploring new options for its line of foldable devices, including tri-folding models.

We previously reported on a leaked corporate call suggesting Samsung is exploring new form factors, as well as cheaper versions of the Z Flip and Z Fold,

And before that, we covered rumors suggesting that the codenames of the Z Fold 7 and Z Flip 7 had leaked, as well as a third codename that we believe is either the suggested tri-fold or a variation of the Z Fold similar to the Z Fold Special Edition.

We’d love to welcome new foldable phones to our list of the best Samsung phones, but for now the above is almost entirely based on rumors and leaks.
