Renowned leaker Ice Universe, known for their accurate predictions and insights into upcoming smartphone releases, recently revealed that the Galaxy S24 Ultra utilizes the QFS4008 fingerprint sensor from Qualcomm. This sensor, which is the same size (8 × 8 mm) and thickness (0.15mm) as its predecessor, the QBT2608 used in the Galaxy S23 Ultra, boasts significant improvements in speed and performance.

Qualcomm’s QFS4008 fingerprint sensor utilizes sound waves to read the unique ridges and valleys of a user’s fingerprint. By transmitting an ultrasonic pulse against the finger, the sensor creates a detailed 64mm2 reproduction of the scanned fingerprint, ensuring quick and reliable security performance. Ice Universe highlights this upgrade, stating, “If you can feel that the ultrasonic fingerprint of the S24 Ultra is faster, it is because Samsung has upgraded the ultrasonic fingerprint module from the QBT2608 of the S23 Ultra to the QFS4008 used by the S24 Ultra.”

According to SamMobile, there are notable differences between the sensors employed in the Galaxy S23 Ultra and Galaxy S24 Ultra. These differences likely contribute to the enhanced speed experienced by users when unlocking their devices using the fingerprint sensor on the newer model.

What sets Samsung apart from other Android flagship phones is its commitment to utilizing ultrasonic fingerprint sensors instead of optical sensors. While some competitors, like Google, continue to rely on optical sensors that capture a photo of the user’s fingerprint and convert it into digital data for comparison, Samsung’s ultrasonic sensors offer a more accurate and secure solution.

In 2021, Google faced criticism when it released the Pixel 6 series with an under-display optical fingerprint sensor that proved to be slow and often inaccurate. Although Google has made improvements with the Pixel 8 line, the use of optical sensors still lags behind the speed and reliability of ultrasonic technology.

Qualcomm emphasizes the superiority of its 3D Sonic ultrasonic fingerprint sensors over optical solutions, stating that they reflect the unique features of an individual’s fingerprint, making them resistant to spoofing. With anti-spoofing technology built-in, the 3D Sonic sensors meet the highest security standards for mobile devices, effectively rejecting imposter photographs and fake molds of a user’s finger.

The introduction of the QFS4008 fingerprint sensor in the Galaxy S24 Ultra marks another step forward in Samsung’s pursuit of innovation and user satisfaction.
