Inside Istanbul: A Look at Galatasaray’s Ambitious Season
Senior Editor Alex Green speaks with renowned Turkish football journalist, Deniz Cengiz, about Galatasaray’s current success and future prospects.
Alex Green: Deniz, thanks for joining us today. Galatasaray’s been on fire this season, both domestically and in Europe. What’s been driving this success?
Deniz Cengiz: it’s a combination of factors, Alex. Firstly, Okan Buruk has really found his stride as manager. He’s instilled a real winning mentality in this team. Secondly, the squad is packed with talent. The summer signings have gelled well with the existing core, and there’s real competition for places.
AG: Speaking of those summer signings, Galatasaray’s transfer activity seems non-stop.What’s the strategy behind the club’s aggressive approach in the market?
DC: I think they’re aiming to build a dynasty. Two league titles in a row is remarkable, but their sights are set on something bigger: that record-breaking 25th championship. Plus, they’ve shown real ambition in Europe. They want to be contenders in the Europa League. To do that, you need quality players, and galatasaray is investing heavily.
AG: That ambition is evident. But is there any area of the squad that needs strengthening even further?
DC: The center-back position is a priority. The departure of Victor Nelsson was a blow, and while they have solid options,I think Buruk wants to bring in a young, commanding center-back who can solidify that defense for years to come.
AG: Let’s talk about Europe. Galatasaray’s undefeated in the Europa League. How far can they go in the competition?
DC: It’s been a fantastic start. But they’ve also had some close calls. That draw against Malmö was a reminder that things won’t always be easy. If they maintain this form, and bring in the right reinforcement in January, I wouldn’t be surprised to see them go deep into the knockout stages.
AG: A lot to look forward to then for Galatasaray fans. Deniz, thanks so much for your insights.
DC:
My pleasure, Alex. It’s an exciting time to be following Galatasaray.
