GOTHENBURG. The return to the Allsvenskan was a humiliation.

Nevertheless, the Gais players were hailed afterwards as having won the match.

– It’s magical. We need to have the supporters behind us throughout the season, says Jonas Lindberg.

A beautiful overhead flag that paid tribute to the first Allsvenskan champions in 1925, a well-filled grandstand and a move that approached the absolute big teams in the Allsvenskan. The Gais supporters had been waiting for the Allsvenskan return for twelve years.

But they did not receive any refund from the green and black players. 0-4 at home against Brommapojkarna was a real slap in the face for both Gais and the supporters.

After the match, the players seemed to hesitate for a long time before walking towards the bleachers, which were quickly emptied. But once they got there, they were celebrated in unison, almost as if they had won the game.

– The best thing about this match was the supporters who were around us in the stands. And the support we get after the match. We will take that with us, and we need that to be able to come out as a different team next weekend, says Gais coach Fredrik Holmberg.

The last two years have forged bonds between the club and the supporters, from the winter of 2021 after they were relegated to Division 1, through the season in the Third Division to last year’s strong autumn which led to a second place in the Superettan.

– We are doing this together, we have felt that for the past two years. We are one with our supporters. And of course that means a lot, the boost it gives us, Holmberg continues.

Even the players highlighted the support after the heavy loss. It was needed, after the slap in the face against last year’s qualifying team.

– It could be decisive for us, we have to have them at our back all season, and I think they will be. They are there for us, and then we have to give something back to them too, says Jonas Lindberg.

What do you want to say to them after this loss?

– I think they are as disappointed as we are. So, there is probably no one who is more disappointed than we are. Now it turned out as it did, and it is heavy for us. We have to keep working and get better at what we do. Because today was not good at all and it is clear that we want to do better.

It was he who missed the mark on Ludvig Fritzon, who could then easily make it 2-0 in the final seconds of the first half. But there were more home players than Lindberg who were responsible for weak efforts. Gais had a lot of the ball, created some, but was significantly worse than the Brommapojkarna in both penalty areas.

How alarming is that?

– It’s not alarming. Or, today it is worrying. It’s done. But we knew that at this level it is a higher level in both penalty areas. That’s where you win games. Today we don’t win in any of them, and then we lose. Now let’s forget about this match, it was crap. We can’t lie down now. It was the first round, there are 29 games left.
