The director’s patience ran out.
Leonid Gaidai’s films are not only distinguished by their sparkling humor and notoriously twisted plot. The director often allowed himself what his other colleagues did not dare.
The director liked to include scenes in his projects where the actresses are sporting bathing suits. By today’s standards, it is nothing like that, but in those days it was something unimaginable. In The Diamond Arm, Gaidai went even further and showed the audience a real “nudity”.
In one of the episodes of the picture, Leonid Kanevsky’s character is naked to the waist. It turned out that initially Leonid Iovich did not plan that the actor would flaunt a bare torso, but the case just helped.
For the filming of this episode, a special suit was sewn to the screen star, only now it looked terrible in the frame. Then Gaidai asked Kanevsky to find a way out of the situation and pick up something more decent. The task proved to be impossible for a celebrity.
When he, being naked, came to the director with a confession that he could not solve the problem, he suddenly realized that the artist had to act like this, without clothes. That is why Leonid Semenovich appeared before the audience in an “obscene form”. Gaidai did it only once: in the next scene, Kanevsky was spinning, dressed in a white T-shirt.
