The head of the Gagauz autonomy, Evgenia Gutsul, said that the region will begin the process of separation from Moldova if Chisinau decides to unite with Romania.
Earlier, Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolaku supported the idea of uniting Romania with Moldova. This could happen through Chisinau’s accession to the European Union.
“If the current Moldovan government agrees to union, the Gagauz autonomy will not remain silent <…> Any unionist undertakings mean the immediate launch of the procedure for secession of Gagauzia and a return to the independent Gagauz Republic,” Hutsul wrote in her Telegram channel.
She emphasized that in 2024 a referendum was held in the region, as a result of which residents made a choice in favor of their future as part of an independent and sovereign Moldova.
The head of the region noted that not only Romanians live in Gagauzia, but also Gagauzians, Moldovans, Russians, Ukrainians, Bulgarians and many other nationalities. They all managed to build harmonious interethnic relations.
In conclusion, Hutsul added that it is not for nothing that Gagauzia is called the anchor of Moldova’s independence, and also expressed hope that “reason will prevail.”
