After his clash with Félix Auger-Aliassime during the Laver Cup, Gaël Monfils recalled that he was in Canada to have fun, while the 37-year-old’s career is getting closer to the end.
Gaël Monfils plays appeasement. Currently in Vancouver to compete in the Laver Cup, an exhibition tournament created by Roger Federer, the 37-year-old Frenchman lost to Félix Auger-Aliassime (6-4, 6-3), not allowing the Team Europe to reignite the suspense against Team World (4-0). But this meeting was marked by a clash between the Monf’ and the Canadian, who criticized the Habs for their lack of investment.
If “FAA” regretted the “tension” between the two players, Monfils said he was “tired” by the “incessant and futile controversies” which have arisen since Friday evening. “Some people seem to get excited over trifles. I am annoyed by those who make hasty judgments. Some might think that because I smile and have fun, I am not serious. Certainly, my vision may be -be different, but I always strive to respect the guidelines given to me,” he explained on X.
“I take this opportunity very seriously”
Selected for the first time since the creation of the Laver Cup in 2017, Gaël Monfils wants to “make the most of every moment”, his career being closer to the end than the peak. “When I was asked to participate in the Laver Cup, I was honored. With my current ranking, outside the top 100 at this age, I even thought it was a joke. But I take this opportunity very seriously, for the event, for my team and especially for me. Traveling to Vancouver and leaving my family again is not the easiest thing. But, despite everything, I continue to practice my profession with passion and sincerity, as I have always done. And, without tongue in cheek, I must admit that I am very well paid for this and that the conditions are exceptional.”
“Happy and fulfilled” in Canada, the Frenchman intends to “take full advantage” of the Laver Cup, which is off to a bad start for Team Europe. After the first day where Team World achieved a flawless performance, the tournament continues this Saturday. Gaël Monfils is notably expected during the last match of the day. He will play in doubles with the Pole Hubert Hurkacz against the pair… Auger-Alliassime/Shelton.
