Gael Monfils says his wife Elina Svitolina’s Wimbledon run made him ‘proud’ and ‘inspired’ Svitolina, who gave birth to daughter Skai in October, was absent for 13 months before returning to the tennis court in April.
In her first two Grand Slam tournaments after returning, Svitolina impressed, reaching the quarterfinals of the French Open and then the semifinals at Wimbledon. Svitolina’s Wimbledon run was particularly impressive as the Ukrainian defeated world number one Iga Swiatek en route to her second semifinal at the Championships.
While Svitolina competed at Wimbledon, Monfils stayed home to take care of his wrist injury and daughter Skai.

“I’m honestly just proud of my wife.
How much work she put in to reach this level. How much discipline she had. I’ve been amazed at her mental toughness in some games, how she turned them around and then came back for her next game – I was proud and inspired.
That’s why I feel like a champion now,” Monfils told Tennis Majors. In three months little Skai will celebrate her first birthday. So far, Monfils and Svitolina have coped well with their duties as parents.
This week, Monfils competes at the Ultimate Tennis Showdown (UTS) in Los Angeles, while Svitolina will spend more time with Skai. “She’s fine, growing up pretty fast actually. It’s tough being at home, but it’s a privilege to be able to have quality time with your child as well.
You can never have enough of it. It’s going to be a few weeks without her and that’s going to be tough, but I think we’ll have more time in a few weeks. It has been an amazing month for me watching my wife how amazing she is and also having quality time with my daughter.
So I’m just full of energy and I really want to do well during this tour,” said Monfils.
