Gaddafi has been imprisoned for several years in the Hadaba prison in the capital Tripoli, where several of his father’s former officials are also awaiting trial in connection with the 2011 uprising.
The authorities do not provide further information about the circumstances surrounding the release, but say that a two-year-old court ruling on Gaddafi’s release has been implemented.
Saadi Gaddafi fled through the Sahara to Niger in connection with the overthrow of his father, Muammar, in the NATO-backed uprising in 2011. In 2014, he was deported from Niger and imprisoned in Tripoli.
After his release, he was free to stay in Libya, but several media reported on Sunday that Gaddafi had already flown to Turkey.
Saadi, now 47, was known for living as a playboy when his father was a dictator. The former footballer has been in prison accused of crimes against protesters in 2011 and for the murder of football coach Bashir al-Rayani.
In the riots in 2011, three of the dictator’s seven sons were killed, and the country has since been marked by chaos and anarchy. A number of militia groups have, with the support of various countries, fought for power in the country
A ceasefire in 2020 put an end to the war and paved the way for peace talks and the formation of a transitional government in March, before the elections in December.
