Göttingen. When Rebecca Klingenberg and Gabriel von Berlepsch enter the Great House of the Deutsches Theater (DT) Göttingen on November 23rd to moderate the KSES Gala, the hall will light up and so will the eyes of the audience. The ensemble couple brings two characters onto the stage who have only been seen once in the DT: Walter and Trude.

“Walter and Trude are more of an East District clientele and have been theater subscribers for decades,” says Klingenberg, explaining the roles. They have been guests of the DT for more than 70 years and have experienced both Heinz Hilpert from 1950 and Günther Fleckenstein (1966 to 1986) during their time as DT directors. With white hair, wearing a tuxedo and a beaded dress, they are allowed to host a fundraising gala for the first time and announce their favorite performers. “Walter and Trude are a bit excited,” reveals the actress. The two of them are not allowed to sing themselves – this is done by colleagues from the ensemble accompanied by Michael Frei’s orchestra.

“Walter and Trude” for the KSES fundraising gala “Puttin’ on the Ritz” at the Deutsches Theater Göttingen
The two figures made their debut in 2012, when Klingenberg and von Berlepsch showed Kurt Tucholsky’s sketch “A Married Couple Tells a Joke” in these roles. Only the audience at the New Year’s Eve Gala 2023 was able to marvel at Walter and Trude in the DT. Actually, the older people are mainly the material for skits in the family circle. “We performed as Walter and Trude at my grandma’s 90th birthday,” says von Berlepsch, giving an example. They appear in front of the public for “Nobody should be lonely” – as moderators of the fundraising gala for people in need.

The entire DT supports the Tageblatt Christmas Aid. “KSES belongs to Göttingen and is lived solidarity right on our doorstep,” says director Erich Sidler. “Cohesion in society is important and a prerequisite for a living democracy.” Accordingly, it is clear to the theater professionals that they will support KSES to the best of their ability and, if possible, expand it.

25,000 euros donated at the KSES Gala in Göttingen 2023
Expand – an apt word for the success of the past two fundraising galas. In front of a sold-out crowd, last year alone another 25,000 euros were raised through ticket sales and donations in the hall. DT director Erich Sidler and Tageblatt editor-in-chief Frerk Schenker increased the sum again through a bet. Of course, the two of them paid off their bet: for a day they volunteered to help out at the train station mission of the Göttingen-Münden Diakonieverband. Will there be such a bet this year? “This remains a secret, but the spectators should definitely have not only coins, but also a few bills with them on November 23rd,” says von Berlepsch. “We want to create at least one euro more than last year.”

We bring the most beautiful, best tracks from musical productions from recent years to the stage.
Gabriel von Berlepsch,
DT actor
There are only a few tickets left at the theater box office for the gala. There are reasons for this: “We are bringing the most beautiful, best tracks from musical productions from recent years to the stage,” announces von Berlepsch. Those involved don’t want to reveal everything yet, but there are a few highlights: “Puttin’ on the Ritz”, as the evening is called in the program, will be performed by Daniel bother and will sing the jazz classic “Minnie the Moocher” from “The Great Gatsby”. Volker Muthmann. There are four actors at the microphones for “River of no Return,” says Klingenberg.
The presentation of the gala takes place at home in the kitchen
The couple can’t anticipate their own moderation: “We mostly think it up at home in the kitchen.” The couple then talks through individual scenes together with Sidler. In the end there is also a lot of improvisation – “but that requires a good foundation,” says von Berlepsch. It grows during the final rehearsals. And then the time has finally come for Walter and Trude for the big change: from the spectator seat up to the boards that mean the world. “We’re all really looking forward to it,” says Klingenberg. “It’s worth coming,” adds her husband.
Last tickets for the gala on November 23rd from 7:45 p.m. are available for 35 or 50 euros dt-goettingen.de and at the theater box office on 0551/4969300.
