Kiel/Berlin (MH) – Gabriel Feltz will be the new general music director of the Kiel Theater. The state capital’s main committee approved his election on Wednesday, the city announced. The theater’s board of directors appointed the 52-year-old as a new board member and GMD on August 15, 2024.
The Berlin native’s contract runs for five years with an option to extend. He succeeds Benjamin Reiners, who is not extending his contract, which runs until summer 2024.
Feltz has been general music director at Theater Dortmund since 2013 and has also been chief conductor of the Belgrade Symphony since 2017. He is tied to both locations until the end of the 2024/25 season. It was said that he wanted to at least partially fulfill his contractual obligations there and at the same time take on tasks in Kiel. This has already been agreed with both houses and their game plans.
Mayor and head of the cultural department Renate Treutel spoke of very good news for Kiel’s cultural life. “We have now settled the successor for Benjamin Reiners quicker than expected and can start preparing for the next season straight away.” Feltz thanked him for the great approval: “This is a strong tailwind for my start in Kiel, which I’m really looking forward to.”
Feltz studied at the Hanns Eisler University of Music in Berlin. After assisting Gerd Albrecht at the Hamburg State Opera, he worked at the Lübeck Theater from 1995 to 1997 and then at the Bremen Theater. From 2000 to 2005 he was general music director of the Theater & Philharmonie Thuringia and from 2004 to 2013 chief conductor of the Stuttgart Philharmonic.
