Montreal’s Gabriel Diallo defeated Japan’s Sho Shimabukuro 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 in the first round of qualifying for the US Open on Monday.
At age 22, Diallo is 144th in the ATP, while Shimabukuro is 242nd.
At the end of July, the Quebecer was a big winner at the Challenger tournament in Chicago. At the beginning of August, Diallo lost in the first round of the National Bank Open against Karen Khachanov, 23rd at the ATP.
His opponent in the second round of qualifying will be France’s Titouan Droguet, 153rd in the world. They crossed swords during the Challenger in June, in England. Droguet then won 7-5, 5-7 and 6-3 in the first round.
