Like his predecessor Elisabeth Borne and the head of state, Gabriel Attal began his political career with the PS. A socialist activist since 2006, graduated from Sciences Po Paris after attending the prestigious – private – Alsatian School, he joined the office of the Minister of Health and Social Affairs Marisol Touraine in 2012, at the age of 23, during the five-year term of François Hollande. He was responsible for speeches, before becoming a political advisor.
When the Minister of the Economy Emmanuel Macron resigned in 2016 and tried his presidential luck, Gabriel Attal left the PS and joined the Macronist start-up, La République en marche (LREM). The first opened the doors of the Élysée in 2017, the second was immediately elected deputy for Hauts-de-Seine. A few months later, the young prodigy became spokesperson for LREM, then Secretary of State to the Minister of National Education and Youth from 2018 to 2020 and government spokesperson from 2020 to 2022. After the second election of Emmanuel Macron, he inherited the portfolio of Public Accounts, then National Education last July.
Gabriel Attal, a new Prime Minister expected at the turning point: “Emmanuel Macron is looking for a performer”
Everywhere he goes, the skillful and ambitious Gabriel Attal shows the extent of his talents as a communicator, including his sense of repartee. He can also indulge. He speaks openly about his homosexuality and recounts, in November on TF1, the school harassment and insults he suffered because of a then “supposed” “sexual orientation”.
During the last school year, he discussed his priorities and, first of all, respect for authority and secularism. He then managed to make the important but peripheral question of wearing the abaya a central subject, almost relegating to second place those of the drop in the standard of schoolchildren and the lack of staff. His promise of “a teacher in front of each class” is not kept.
But whatever ! This outing is above all a tactical move, that of an offensive against the extreme right. Authority is a major political theme, carried for a long time by the National Rally (RN), and by the right too; an essential theme for French people of all stripes. And in the space of a new school year, Gabriel Attal manages to embody authority, without fracturing the electorate, which the Minister of the Interior Gérald Darmanin did not succeed.
With this head of executive, that of the state also chooses a loyal and popular politician, high in the polls. Among all the ministers, he is the favorite of the French, ahead of Bruno Le Maire and Gérald Darmanin.
Small downside: he represents the elites and the in-between for the extreme right, which is a source of the RN vote. He could, moreover, have the same faults as Emmanuel Macron.
But time will tell. The meteoric rise of Gabriel Attal may not be over. The presidential election is being held in three years and, for the moment, the man with whom his destiny has been linked for so many years does not have a designated heir apparent.
