France has a 34-year-old prime minister, the youngest ever. According to Le Monde on the 9th, French President Emmanuel Macron appointed the current Minister of Education, Gabriel Attal, born in 1989, as the new Prime Minister. President Macron announced the appointment through social media, saying, “I can trust Attal’s energy and dedication to solving national tasks.” Reuters said, “The combined ages of President Macron (46) and new Prime Minister Attal (34) are younger than U.S. President Joe Biden (81).”

Prime Minister Attal became the youngest prime minister of France, breaking the record of Prime Minister Laurent Fabius, who was appointed at the age of 38 in 1984. He is also the first openly gay prime minister. He served as government spokesperson in the late first term of center-right President Macron’s first term, and public accounting minister in the early part of his second term, before moving to the position of Minister of Education in July of last year. He achieved great results in educational reform, such as banning the wearing of the ‘abaya (long dress)’, an Islamic clothing, on campus, and promoting measures to improve basic academic skills of French students.

He will succeed former Prime Minister Elisabeth Born, who resigned on the 8th. Former Prime Minister Born faced the risk of resigning several times in the process of promoting the Macron government’s core pledges. He pushed for policies with strong pros and cons, such as pension reform focusing on extending the retirement age and immigration law amendments, and in the process, the opposition party submitted several no-confidence motions demanding his resignation as prime minister. There is an analysis in the French political world that President Macron replaced the prime minister in order to regain momentum in state affairs.

Foreign media analyzed that President Macron, who was elected with the nickname ‘Golden Boy’ for his young and capable image, had put forward a prime minister with a similar image to himself in the past. He recently earned the nickname ‘Language Hunter’ for his brilliant speaking skills in parliament and on the radio.
