Gabon’s transitional president, General Brice Olegy Nguema, appointed economist Raymond Ndong Sima as head of the transitional government.
The appointment decision was announced today, Thursday, in a decree read on state television.
Wasima (68 years old) is a fierce opponent of the ousted president, Ali Bongo. He assumed the prime minister during the latter’s term, between 2012 and 2014, but he soon moved away from the regime, accusing him of mismanaging the country.
Sima ran against Bongo in the presidential elections in 2016 and then in 2023.
Earlier today, the Economic Community of Central African States announced that the military in Gabon is ready to draw a “road map” for a return to civilian rule.

This comes after Nguema announced, yesterday, Wednesday, that the ousted President Ali Bongo is “free to move” and “can travel abroad if he so desires,” following his placement under house arrest.
Yesterday, Nguema received the Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Central Africa, Abdou Abari, and they held a meeting in the presence of a large number of officers and leaders of the new government in Gabon, and they discussed the current situation in the country and the prospects for the transitional period.
Nguema received the President of the Central African Republic, Faustin Touadera, who was appointed by the Economic Community of Central African States, in order to “facilitate the political process” in the country, to be the first head of state to visit Libreville after Bongo’s ouster, late last month.
