In the markets and supermarkets of the cities of Gabon, the scarcity of sugar is observed more and more and leads to an increase in prices.

1500 Fcfa is now the price of a kilogram of sugar in the markets against 925 Fcfa. According to a survey by the Le Nouveau Gabon site, the company Sucrerie africaine (Sucaf Gabon), the Gabonese subsidiary of Somdiaa, explains that this shortage is caused by logistical problems. In particular, difficulties related to rail transport as well as the isolation of roads which limit the evacuation of the stocks of the company whose factories are located more than 700 km from the main sales areas.

«Stocks are rising slowly. One or two containers arriving, cis quickly absorbedIt is. It’s necessary To little aboutAnds two To three weeks, because we are in the rainy season. As soon as we arrive in the dry season, the road will be faster to supply Libreville and all the provinces», explains the commercial and marketing director of the African Sugar Company (Sucaf Gabon), Donald Ollo Nguema, quoted by Media241. Sucaf nevertheless reassures about the imminent return of sugar to the markets.

Recall that in the last quarter of 2022, the sugar processing index fell by 63.2% quarter-on-quarter according to data from the Ministry of the Economy. This poor performance is the result of a bad sugar campaign due to unfavorable climatic conditions and the aging of the fields, we learned.
