Libreville, Friday June 2, 2023 (Gabon Info) – The two themes are at the center of their 4e General assembly organized in Port-Gentil.
Gathered since yesterday Thursday in Port-Gentil as part of their 4e General Assembly, the mayors of Gabon reflect on land and the environment. This work under the chairmanship of the Minister of Decentralization, Cohesion and Territorial Development, Michel Menga M’Essone, aims to raise awareness of each other on their practices with a view to real awareness. With the central theme: “The problem of land and its consequences on the environment”, these meetings aim to draw attention to responsible behavior in terms of land that could have consequences on the environment. “It is because the intergovernmental groups of experts are working to understand the phenomena of climate change, and the effect of human activity on ecosystems, that it is now up to us, those responsible for decentralization, to share our experiences, our intelligence in order to master issues related to land and its consequences in our municipalities”, indicated Gabriel Tchango, Mayor of Port-Gentil and 1is vice-president of the Assembly of Mayors of Gabon (AMG).
The participants in these meetings review all the questions related to the land and environmental situation in the country in order to find adequate solutions which will then be transmitted to the government. “The recommendations that will come out of this assembly, can be tabled on the government table, so that the decentralization that we are looking for so much or that some articles of this decentralization are effective”, underlined Christine Mba Ndutume Mihindou, Mayor of Libreville and President of the AMG. For the Minister of Decentralization, Cohesion and Territorial Development, the application of decentralization policies is the guarantee of the effectiveness of State spending for the benefit of the populations. “The control of land and the environment are the basis of a public policy for the development of territories. We are convinced that without these levers, local authorities will remain, unfinished institutions, the best players in the preservation of the environment are you. You are the one managing the populations. Mayors must be involved in environmental management. We would have to rectify the situation, so that things go as smoothly as possible, ”said Michel Menga M’Essone.
