Gaál: “Blooming Home” photo competition rewards our city’s “green thumbs”.

The city of Vienna’s flowery photo competition took place for the 16th time this year: around 700 hobby gardeners took part

In Vienna, everything is planted, cared for and, ideally, harvested with a lot of heart. The City of Vienna’s “Blooming Home” photo competition has been correspondingly well received, with around 700 hobby gardeners photographing and submitting their green oases this year. On the occasion of the 16th edition of the flowery photo competition

“Gardening has a long tradition in Vienna. This is not only because more than half of the city is green space and Vienna’s parks and gardens have always been an invitation to linger and relax. It’s especially up to the Viennese, who often create their own little plant paradise with a lot of love. These natural jewel boxes bring joy when strolling through the streets and at the same time gardening together strengthens social cohesion in our city. With the photo competition ‘Blooming Home’, Vienna’s private green oases are the center of attention for the masses they deserve. No matter whether it’s a balcony, terrace, garden, indoor garden or window sill – it’s always a feast for the eyes to see the enthusiasm and love with which the Viennese care for their green oases,” says Vice Mayor and Housing Councilor Kathrin Gaál.

Wiener Wohnen director Karin Ramser is also very concerned about greenery in the city and especially in Vienna’s municipal buildings, although the word “large” should be taken literally: “Wiener Wohnen looks after around 610 hectares of green space, which is roughly the same size as Vienna -Währing. Among other things, we look after around 68,000 trees – around 37 per residential complex – and a million bushes. The most common tree species are black pine, Norway maple, white birch, sycamore maple and winter lime.”

“For me, this competition is a visible sign of how much the Viennese care about their city. I find the community gardens particularly impressive, in which greenery is created with a lot of love, which benefits so many people. Since I have been since the first “Having taken part in this competition 16 years ago, I am particularly pleased about the development that more and more young people are taking care of the greenery in the city. You can see that the participants are making Vienna their ‘Blooming Home’,” he said Karl Ploberger.
