G7 summit: Donald Trump postpones meeting until autumn

A day after Chancellor Angela Merkel accepted Donald Trump’s invitation had knocked outTo participate in the planned G7 summit in the US in June, the US president has announced that the meeting will be postponed until the autumn. At the same time, he wanted to expand the list of participants, Trump said on Saturday to journalists on board Air Force One.

A G7 format summit does not correctly reflect “what is happening in the world,” said the US President: “It is a very outdated group of countries.” He also wants to invite Russia, South Korea, Australia and India to an extended summit in autumn – but not the People’s Republic of China.

The White House announced in March that due to the corona pandemic, the G7 summit planned for June could not be held at Trump’s Camp David estate, but would have to be replaced by a video conference by the heads of state and government of the seven most important industrialized countries. A few days ago, Trump had surprisingly declared that since his country was already recovering from the pandemic, the summit could take place.

A White House spokeswoman said traditionally expanding allies would bring traditional allies together to discuss how to deal with China in the future. Trump is hosting the G7 summit this year. Most recently, spokeswoman Kayleigh McEnany said the meeting should take place in Washington’s White House in late June.

Trump’s push to invite Russia to the meeting is likely to spark discussions within the G7. The country ruled by President Vladimir Putin was excluded after the annexation to Crimea in 2014. Only at the G7 summit in Biarritz, France last August, Trump failed with his proposal to reintroduce Russia into the group of important economic powers. Russia, unlike the other countries Trump wants to invite, is not an ally of the United States.
