In order to fight terrorism in the region, the G5-Sahel heads of state (Mauritania, Mali, Chad, Niger and Burkina Faso) appealed to the international community to provide them with more military support.
During the Summit of Heads of State and Government of the G5-Sahel and of France, held yesterday, Tuesday, June 30, in Nouakchott and in which French President Emmanuel Macron participated, as well as European, African and international officials, these Heads of State have requested permanent funding for the joint force of the G5-Sahel and call for the placement of this force in article 7 of the United Nations Charter.
At the same time, the Heads of State took advantage of this Summit to renew their call for the cancellation of the external debt of the G5-Sahel countries, according to the “Statement by Nouakchott on the COVID-19 pandemic “. A decision that was taken following the extraordinary session of the G5-Sahel Conference of Heads of State on April 27.
G5-Sahel Heads of State welcomed the commitment of partners, particularly the United States, and stress the need to continue and strengthen the equipment support of the Defense and Security Forces of G5 member states Sahel and the Joint Force.
Among the objectives of this summit, the continuous strengthening of the process announced in Pau in January 2020, to assess the military action against the armed groups in this region and to examine the support that the Barkhane Force brings to the joint force of the G5 Sahel , but also to put an end to terrorism in the area of the three borders and in the sub-region.
