Highlighting the tension, Retno said she had previously been told by her G7 colleagues that they would not be able to take part in a welcome dinner attended by Lavrov.
“Our responsibility is to end the war as soon as possible and resolve our differences at the negotiating table, not on the battlefield,” she said Friday at the opening of the talks.
A senior Indonesian Foreign Ministry spokesman said no communiqué was expected following the meeting.
“Given the presence and participation of Russia, I doubt that a consensus will be reached, for example, on Ukraine,” a senior US State Department official said ahead of the summit.
