G20 Meeting in India: Lack of Consensus on Russia’s Military Operation in Ukraine and Renewable Energy Goals

Representatives of the G20 countries at a meeting in India could not agree on a final statement condemning Russia’s military operation in Ukraine, Bloomberg reports.

The agency notes that the Vice-Chancellor and Minister of Economics of Germany Robert Habek criticized the Deputy Minister of Energy of Russia Pavel Sorokin “for promoting a ‘distorted worldview’ about the causes of the energy crisis” and for military action.

Russia and Saudi Arabia have objected to an agreement to triple renewable generation capacity by 2030, while China has hindered expansion of cooperation on critical raw materials, Habek said.

Nor did the G20 countries come to a consensus on phasing out fossil fuels, exacerbating sluggish progress in climate diplomacy ahead of key meetings this year. While some states have agreed on the need to phase out the rampant use of oil and gas, others believe that emissions problems can be solved with carbon removal technologies, the meeting’s outcome document says.

“By and large, all members were unanimous in their opinion on the need to combat climate change,” said the Minister of Energy of India Raj Kumar Singh after meeting.

Bloomberg notes that the G20 ministerial meeting was held against the background of heat waves in Europe, Asia and the United States, and discussions were supposed to “set the tone” for the energy transition ahead of the G20 leaders’ meeting in September and the COP28 climate forum in Dubai in December.
