G20 earmarks USD 5 trillion for economic measures NOW

G20 leaders pledged on Thursday to use $ 5 trillion ($ 4.5 trillion) to stem the economic consequences of the corona crisis.

In a joint statement, leaders led by G20 president Saudi Arabia said they will “do everything in their power to overcome the pandemic.” The members of the Group of Twenty spoke in video chat for an hour and a half.

Among other things, the politicians have made agreements about the unimpeded supply and transit of medical equipment and other products. In addition, financial resources will be released so that the necessary tax measures can be taken.

The G20 leaders have also agreed to strengthen the production of medical equipment, share clinical data among themselves and to expand the possibilities to act against infectious diseases.

Weaker, mainly African, countries and population groups such as refugees, should also receive extra help, say the twenty parties. To support countries with the “fullest use of all means”, the G20 has also sought help from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank Group.

The coronavirus in short

  • The coronavirus mainly spreads from person to person via sneezing and cough drops. The chance of becoming infected through surfaces such as door handles is small. This chance decreases if you wash your hands often.
  • You can considerably reduce the chance of spreading by keeping at least 1.5 meters away from others.
  • An infected person infects two to three others on average. Precautions are necessary to contain this.
  • The vast majority of patients have mild (flu-like) complaints.
  • Almost all deaths involve the elderly or other vulnerable persons, such as heart, lung or diabetes patients. If everyone complies with the measures, this reduces their risks.
