G DATA Study2Protect Award: Tristan Hornetz receives the award for the best thesis on cybersecurity in Germany

The Study2Protect Award from G DATA CyberDefense AG celebrated a successful premiere on November 6, 2024 at the G DATA Campus in Bochum. Four finalists presented their bachelor’s and master’s theses in the areas of cybersecurity, cyberdefense and cyberresilience with a short presentation to the expert jury and around 100 guests. Tristan Hornetz impressed experts from science, business, authorities and associations with his work and won the award worth 1,000 euros.

Tristan Hornetz was the first winner of the Study2Protect Award on November 6, 2024 at the G DATA Campus in Bochum. His thesis on “Execute-Only Memory as a Security Hardening Feature on x86-64”, written at CISPA, Saarland University, Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science, convinced the jury with its high relevance and clear practical relevance. The finalists of the G DATA Study2Protect Awards presented their outstanding bachelor’s and master’s theses in the areas of cybersecurity, cyberdefense and cyberresilience to around 100 guests. These have been submitted to German universities and technical colleges since the winter semester of 2022/23. An independent jury, consisting of experts from science, business, authorities and associations, selected the works based on scientific excellence and practical relevance.

The event provided the finalists with a stage to present their research results. In addition, the keynote speech by Prof. Dr. Peter Schwabe, Director of the Max Planck Institute for Security and Privacy, provided guests with exciting insights into the future of IT security. The evening ended with a joint dinner and networking, which offered numerous opportunities for exchange.

What is the Study2Protect Award?

The Study2Protect Award, worth 1,000 euros, was created to highlight the importance of research and innovation in cybersecurity. With this award, G DATA CyberDefense AG is setting an example for the promotion of young IT security talent and increasing awareness of digital resilience in Germany. The prize is to be awarded annually at the G DATA Campus in Bochum.
