FX’s ‘Shōgun’ Premieres with Record-Breaking Streaming Numbers Worldwide

Shōgun Premiere Breaks Streaming Records Around the World

Highly Anticipated FX Series Delivers Massive Audience on Digital Platforms

The premiere of FX’s highly anticipated series, Shōgun, has left an indelible mark on the digital world, garnering an impressive worldwide streaming audience alongside strong on-air viewership in the United States.

Record-Breaking Global Streaming Figures

Within the first six days of release, the first episode of this limited series, based on James Clavell’s best-selling 1975 novel, was viewed a staggering 9 million times on streaming platforms including Hulu, Disney+, and Star+. Notably, this marks the best worldwide debut for a Disney General Entertainment scripted series, excluding those falling under the Marvel, Star Wars, Disney Branded TV, Pixar, or National Geographic banners.

Outperforming FX’s Streaming Records

The streaming debut of Shōgun’s premiere episode has also shattered records domestically. It surpassed the streaming numbers of any previous FX show on Hulu, propelled in part by its availability on Disney+. Internationally, Shōgun topped the series premiere viewership of The Kardashians among Disney General Entertainment productions.

An Enormous Viewer Engagement

The 9 million views enjoyed by the premiere episode of Shōgun corresponded to an astonishing 630 million minutes of viewing time, translating to approximately 10.5 million hours for the captivating 70-minute episode.

Strong On-Air Performance

In addition to Shōgun’s exceptional streaming figures, the show had an auspicious on-air debut on FX, with the first episode attracting an average of 764,000 same-day viewers. The second episode, which premiered at 11:38 p.m. ET, drew an impressive audience of 442,000. These numbers outperformed recent season premieres of FX’s popular series, Fargo and American Horror Story.

A Stellar Cast and Production Team

Shōgun boasts a talented ensemble cast, including Hiroyuki Sanada, Anna Sawai, Cosmo Jarvis, Tadanobu Asano, Hiroto Kanai, Takehiro Hira, Moeka Hoshi, Tokuma Nishioka, Shinnosuke Abe, Yuki Kura, Yuka Kouri, and Fumi Nikaido. This captivating series was created by Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks, with Marks serving as showrunner. The executive production team comprises Marks, Kondo, Michaela Clavell, Edward L. McDonnell, and Michael De Luca.
