Mülheim an der Ruhr (ots)

The fire brigade had a lot to do on what is known as the hottest night of the year. From the start of work on New Year’s Eve morning at 8 a.m. to the end of work on New Year’s Day at 8 a.m., our emergency services were alerted to a large number of operations. Luckily there were no major fires. Without contact restrictions and after the ban on firecrackers was lifted in the past two years, many citizens used the mild New Year’s Eve to greet the new year exuberantly on the streets. In total, the Mülheim emergency services were alerted 140 times – 31 times they had to go out on fire (2022 – 6 times) and 107 times on emergency services. 25 small fires such as burning garbage cans, paper containers, small areas and fires on vehicles had to be extinguished. A reported building fire on Oberhausener Strasse with house-high flames on the back of the building turned out to be less dramatic: a fir tree was burning in the backyard. When the emergency services arrived, the measures were limited to post-extinguishing work. Furthermore, two smaller technical assistances, a triggered home smoke detector and a fire alarm system had to be processed. In the field of rescue services, the numbers of operations are at the level of an “average” day. An ambulance had to be deployed to 57 locations – these included excessive alcohol consumption, people who had fallen, minor burns or injuries caused by glass. At 10 sites, the use of an emergency doctor was necessary. The ambulance carried out 50 transports. Unfortunately, the shift did not end quite so happily for an ambulance crew. The Johanniter ambulance was alerted to a physical injury at Styrum station. The supposed patient spat on the ambulance crew. The police who were called took the patient into custody. The rescue service was no longer required. The police have started the investigation and the perpetrator is expected to be reported. A special thank you again this year to the many volunteers from the German Red Cross, the Johanniter, Malteser and volunteer fire brigades who supported us on this special night and ensured the safety of the Mülheim citizens.
