Several callers reported a fire on Leineweberstraße to the fire brigade control center at 7:41 p.m. When the first emergency services arrived, flames were already shooting out of the windows of an apartment on the second floor of a six-storey residential and commercial building. Since people were still believed to be in the apartment that was on fire, rescue measures were taken immediately. A total of 31 people were rescued from the higher floors, some using turntable ladders. Due to the large number of people affected and possibly injured, the alarm keyword was increased to mass casualty incidents. This alerted other rescue services to the scene. A mother was transported with her three small children to a hospital in Oberhausen with suspected smoke intoxication. Two other people were transported to a Mülheim hospital with the same diagnosis. The other people affected were cared for by emergency chaplains. The extinguishing work was difficult because the affected apartment was full from floor to ceiling. The Mülheim fire brigade was on site with two fire engines, three lead vehicles, four ambulances and two emergency medical vehicles. The professional fire brigade was supported by the volunteer fire brigade and vehicles from the Mülheim aid organizations. The operation is currently (10:00 p.m.) still ongoing due to post-extinguishing work. Leineweberstraße is completely closed. (TDr)
