The show gets off to a flying start in a futuristic setting, with an immense skyline as a backdrop, full of iconic buildings such as the Empire State Building and the CN Tower, from Tesfaye’s hometown of Toronto. The three band members are neatly integrated on small stages in that wall. There are fire elements between the tops of the skyline, which occasionally set the King Baudouin Stadium on fire. Everyone in the audience has been given a bracelet that sometimes lights up in a certain color: a similar system to which Coldplay has been touring for years.
The two other set pieces are in the central square. At the end of the long catwalk that divides the standing audience in two, a floating moon hangs above the audience for two hours. A meter-high silver female robot, whose eyes turn different colors as they rotate, finishes it off. The image is by Japanese illustrator Hajime Sorayama, who is known for sexy robot images.
