Hear some of New York’s most unique Latin voices as New Wave brings its popular Latine Composers Showcase al Atrium del Lincoln Center (61 W 62nd St), this Thursday, November 9 at 7:30 pm. Futures: New Ideas in Composition features vocalist, songwriter and multimedia artist Stefa Marín Alarcón, a Queens native, who will sing a selection of her new material, an amalgam of punk, experimental pop and classic minimalism with an ethereal maximalist aesthetic; bassist and composer Brandon López will join Argentine composer and multimedia artist Cecilia López for an electrifying jam session; and to close the evening, vocalist and interdisciplinary artist Isabel Crespo Pardo will present songs from her upcoming album, combining music, visual art, text and performance. Latin Culture Festival

Brooklyn Children’s Book Fair

The Brooklyn Museum (200 Eastern Parkway) celebrates the return of its Annual Children’s Book Fair this Sunday, November 12, from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. This will be the largest event in the fair’s history and will bring together 41 Brooklyn authors and illustrators to share their latest works. For the first time, the free event will feature picture books, graphic novels, including works of fiction, nonfiction and poetry, for preschoolers through high school students, in both English and Spanish, among other languages. Concert by Mariachi Herencia de México

Founded in 2016, Mariachi Herencia de México began as an ensemble of passionate students from Chicago. “Nuestra Herencia,” their 2017 debut album, was the first major mariachi recording released by a U.S. student ensemble, and earned a Latin GRAMMY nomination for Best Ranchero/Mariachi Album, making it one of the of the most successful albums of the genre in history in the United States.; and more recently his album Herederos (2022) again obtained a Latin GRAMMY nomination in the same category. Angelo Colina at the Comedy Festival

Angelo Colina, a Venezuelan comedian, actor and director, will be one of the first headliners performing exclusively in Spanish (and the first Venezuelan headliner) at this year’s New York Comedy Festival. Colina’s comedic style transcends language barriers and is designed to resonate with first, second and third generation Latinos, exploring the unique experiences of being bicultural and bilingual. Poetry meeting at Terrace 7

“LatinX Experience” with the Hispanic Ballet

Ballet Hispánico, the nation’s largest Latinx cultural organization and one of America’s Cultural Treasures, is pleased to present The Latinx Immersive Experience, as part of Lincoln Center Moments. The show will take the audience on a guided tour of Latinx dance and culture, and features excerpts from Ballet Hispánico’s repertoire, exploring music, cultural connection, choreographic perspectives and history to deepen the understanding of dance from a global and accessible perspective. Performances at 11:00 am are designed for a neurodiverse audience; and 1:00 pm are followed by a one-hour workshop designed especially for audiences affected by dementia, facilitated by educators and music therapists who explore the work through discussion, movement, music and artistic creation. Colombian artist’s spirals at MoMA

The MoMA (Museum of Modern Art) will premiere this Saturday, November 11, the exhibition “Spiral for shared dreams” by the Colombian multidisciplinary artist Carolina Caycedo, which will be in the museum’s Marron Family Atrium until May 19, 2024. During For more than a decade, Caycedo has researched the impact of hydroelectric dams and other infrastructure projects on rivers, lakes, and oceans in the Americas and on communities with strong ties to them. “Spiral for shared dreams” consists of eleven handmade cast nets created by four fishing communities in Mexico, each facing different environmental challenges: Mujeres Pescadoras del Manglar in Oaxaca, Salvemos Temaca, Acasico and Palmarejo in Jalisco, Sociedad Cooperativa Norte de Nayarit and Women of the Gulf Cooperative Society in Baja California Sur. Caycedo purchased used nets from these communities and ordered new ones, which she then dyed and embroidered.
