Future Soldiers: Children of Soldiers Attend Youth Guard Recruitment Camps in Latvia

For most of the 20 children of soldiers, this is their first experience of shooting, but some of them already know that they want to link their future with the army.

Camp participant Ernests said that he would like to study at Colonel Oskar Kalpak’s vocational secondary school, which interested him. “When I grow up, I want to be a soldier myself,” Ernest said. He has participated in such camps several times and has been going to Jaunsardze for three years.

The instructor of the Young Guard Center, Iveta Razma-Liebek, has observed that

active lessons, orienteering, boating and various team games connect the most participants.

“This is our “airsoft” weapon, it is neither pneumatic nor battery-operated. Plastic balls. Of course, a young guard and also a candidate for a young guard need training for this weapon, which has already happened before. So communication, cooperation, and we encourage this civic awareness that we need it up to a certain point in order to be able to take care of ourselves,” said Razma-Liebek.

Some of the camp participants have been working in Jaunsardze for several years, while others are still planning to get involved. Such are the intentions of elementary school students Ralf and Vestard, who want to connect their future with a military career.

Ralph was motivated to participate in the camp by the opportunity to sleep in a tent and “Airsoft” [militārās spēles] playing.

On the other hand, Vestard was motivated by his mother, who serves in the National Guard, and his father, who works in the NBS Navy.

The children spent four days at the camp, during which they had to learn not only shooting, but also many other lessons.

Camp member Sandi liked rowing the boat the most. I also like to shoot, although I still don’t manage to aim so well. Meanwhile, camp participant Evija is happy to get to know nature and other children.

This summer, a total of 13 such youth guard recruitment camps are taking place in Latvia, covering all regions. They are organized by the Jaunsardzes Center in cooperation with NBS. Unlike other years, the children of State Police employees also participate in separate camps.
