Future Plans for Salvaging and Removing Burnt-Out Cars from the Fremantle Highway Shipwreck

There is no final plan yet for what will happen to the cars on the ship. Peter Berdowski, CEO of salvage company Boskalis, said on Thursday that about a thousand vehicles on the bottom four decks of the ship are still in good condition and ‘perfectly towable’.

However, it is not certain that these vehicles will actually be removed from the ship. “You don’t want the cars to catch fire again because of the towing and all the misery starts all over again,” Berdowski said late last week.

Melted

For the 2,700 other cars on board, which are heavily damaged, it is certainly questionable whether they will be removed from the ship. Berdowski emphasized that it was never said that this should happen in Eemshaven. These are burnt-out wrecks that were on the upper decks. “Part of those decks have completely merged with the cars. The decks are very badly damaged and difficult to access.”

These photos show the extent of the damage:

The Fremantle Highway was loaded with several thousand cars on its way from Germany to Egypt and would then continue to Singapore. On July 25, things went wrong and a major fire broke out off the coast of Ameland.

Wounded

Cornered crew members eventually jumped off the tall ship into the sea. Of the mainly Indian passengers, 22 were injured, one of them was killed.
