A study commissioned by the Flemish government into the future of Flemish regional airports shows that there is room to significantly increase the rate for business flights. “That’s right,” adds Wouter Dewulf. He is the author of the study and a transport economist at the University of Antwerp.
“Private jets in Antwerp simply pay too little. The rates in Eindhoven or Rotterdam are a lot higher. A private jet in Antwerp today pays €75 to €100 per tonne to land or take off, depending on its weight. We have made a rough calculation If the rates were multiplied by ten, we think the airport could break even. In the price of a private flight, the airport rate is only a fraction, so they won’t lose customers, but for the airport it could mean a lot.”
