In the coming months, the municipality of Cranendonck will discuss the future of the asylum seekers’ center in Budel with State Secretary Eric van der Burg (Asylum) and the Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers.
The Brabant municipality wants the azc to leave there, but the Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers (COA) will soon apply for a permit again.
The city council decided last year that the azc must close on July 1, 2024, when the contract expires. The fact that the COA will soon be applying for a permit again would mean that it wants to stay there longer. Alderman Hennie Driessen announced this on Tuesday evening during an information evening for the city council.
The revelation sparked outrage among the parties present. They pointed, among other things, to the residents’ survey that was released two weeks ago. This showed that there is no longer any support in Budel for the azc with fifteen hundred reception places. This is due to the great nuisance experienced by the residents of the Brabant village.
Driessen said that the exploratory talks should clarify what the State Secretary and COA think about it. Those talks should actually be completed before the end of June, but according to the alderman, that will not work. He thinks that it will not be clear until October at the earliest how everyone sees the future.
Driessen emphasized that the residents’ survey is leading in the talks between the municipality and the central government and the COA. The council advocates sticking to the decision to close the AZC next year in any case.
