Future iPads will have a bigger screen and wireless charging

Apple is looking for ways to further innovate the iPad. According to a new rumor, a larger screen would play an important role in this.

Apple investigates iPad with larger screen

That’s what Mark Gurman says in a Bloomberg newsletter. Gurman is arguably the most reliable source when it comes to Apple rumors. In the message, he writes that Apple is researching iPads that are larger than the largest iPad of the moment: the iPad Pro 2021 with a 12.9 inch display.

This unannounced iPad is said to be still in the early development phase and will only be announced in “a few years.” For 2022, Apple would still be working on a glass-backed iPad, which will come in the same 11 and 12.9-inch sizes we already know.

According to Gurman, Apple is exploring these larger screens to further blur the thin line between the iPad and the Mac. Every year the iPad gets more professional, with new iPadOS features that increasingly turn the tablet into a full-fledged laptop alternative. With a larger screen, new functions would be possible that correspond to this.

Wireless charging to the iPad

Before this happens, Apple would first like to renew the design of the iPad next year. The new iPads would be equipped with a glass back, which makes wireless charging possible (just like with the iPhone). It would be the first time that an iPad can be charged without a cord.

The tablet would also support ‘reverse wireless charging’, so that, for example, you can charge an iPhone or AirPods on the back of the iPad to charge them. This feature was initially intended for the iPhone but was eventually not implemented. Apple may have encountered complications that the iPad does not suffer from.
