INVESTIGATION – Two petitions from internship candidates have already gathered more than 5,000 signatures. These students from the 2024 class are denouncing a reduction of 1,500 positions in specialties that the hospital urgently needs. Some are tempted to leave France.

In just five days, in the middle of summer, more than 5,000 sixth-year medical students have already signed a petition in the form of a supplication – more than half of the class. Let us recall here that at the end of the second cycle of medical studies – the externship – fifth-year students take the internship competition. Depending on their ranking, they select both the specialties they hope for and the cities where they are offered. They will be interns for five years, will receive a modest salary, while assuming a public service mission that is crucial for the State in a context of overcrowded public hospitals.
