In recent days there has been a commotion on Twitter about the flag that could be seen during the inauguration of Root Colony as a World Heritage Site. A black and yellow Flemish flag hung behind Flemish Minister of Real Estate Matthias Diependaele (N-VA). This flag is not the official symbol of Flanders, but of the Flemish Movement. Opponents describe this as a “collaboration flag”. The spokesman for the minister emphasizes that this is not a statement.

It is not the words of Minister Matthias Diependaele (N-VA) from his speech that keep people busy after it has ended, but the yellow flag that hung behind him. The minister gave a speech this weekend during the inauguration of the Root Colony in Hoogstraten as a World Heritage Site. There was a fuss on Twitter about the flag that could be seen behind the minister. After all, that was not the official Flemish flag, but the black and yellow version without red claws and tongue.

“Collaboration flag”?

Outraged reactions surfaced on Twitter. Some opponents refer to it as a “collaboration flag”, referring to its use by collaborators from the more radical Flemish Movement during the Second World War.

The spokesman for the minister emphasizes that this is not a statement. “The result of a confluence of circumstances,” Ben Bruynseels, the minister’s spokesman, reported to the VRT. “The intention was that we would record an official response during the festivities on Sunday. On the spot, however, we noticed that no flag was provided, unlike at the ceremonies of other countries. Someone who lived nearby quickly went to get a flag.”

“No one on site thought at that time which flag that was,” says Bruynseels. According to the spokesperson, this is not a statement. “We are not going to apologize or get into a discussion about which flag it is. That doesn’t seem important to us. The most important thing is that we are included in the prestigious World Heritage List.”
