Berlin’s red-red-green government coalition considers it possible that further aid packages will have to be financed due to the corona crisis. The prerequisites for this are to be created when the supplementary budget is adopted on December 10, as announced on Wednesday from coalition circles. Another credit authorization for 500 million euros is being considered. With this, the Senate could make additional state aid possible if this should become necessary in view of the further development of the corona pandemic. RBB-Inforadio had previously reported about it on Wednesday.
New loans are actually forbidden to the federal states because of the nationwide debt brake. At the beginning of June, however, the House of Representatives identified an “exceptional emergency situation” due to the corona pandemic and thus approved an exception to the ban on new debts. However, the Berlin State Audit Office has already clearly criticized the red-red-green budget policy in the corona crisis in its annual report presented in October. Among other things, it was about the far too long repayment period from the point of view of President Karin Klingen and the intention to build up reserves from the loans.

Sibylle Meister, spokeswoman for budget and finances of the Berlin FDP parliamentary group, complained on Wednesday that it was “sheer irresponsibility” that the red-red-green coalition was thinking about increasing borrowing by a further 500 million euros. “With the first supplementary budget, the coalition has already raised six billion euros in 2020 and 600 million euros in 2021. Of this, 1.2 billion euros have not yet been planned, ”said the budget politician. Therefore, there is no need for further loans.
