The jury prize at the 43rd edition of the Leids Cabaret Festival was won by Stefan Hendrikx. “When Stefan Hendrikx comes up, you immediately see that we are dealing with an all-round performer”, says in the jury report† “He’s really funny.”
The 31-year-old Hendrikx performed in the final in the theater in Leiden with a program about what he calls “being a man in a post-apocalyptic society”. The jury especially appreciated that this theme is not pushed down the spectator’s throat, said jury member Nina de la Croix in NOS With a view to Tomorrow† “It’s not moralistic, but humorous.”
Improvisational cabaret
Hendrikx, who was born in Venlo, graduated as a comedian from the Koningstheater Academy in Den Bosch in 2013, and since then has mainly practiced improvisational cabaret. With fellow comedian Andries Tunru and pianist Joep Hullegie, he forms the improvisation collective Limited Durability.
Hendrikx sees people as Daniël Arends and Henry van Loon in the Netherlands as examples, he told Het Oog. Judge De la Croix thinks he could follow in their footsteps in terms of success. “He has all the facets of which I think: this could be a big one.”
Three winners
The two other finalists of the Leids Cabaret Festival also received prizes. Piet van Eeghen received the audience award and Celine Schrama the student award. It was the first time in the festival’s history that the prizes were distributed among all finalists.
