Funny move at Barça: the Spanish club recruits a retired goalkeeper to replace ter Stegen

FC Barcelona announced the arrival of Wojciech Szczesny on Wednesday. The Polish goalkeeper, 34, announced the end of his professional career at the end of August after his departure from Juventus.

He signed a contract until the end of the season. Barça had to find a goalkeeper following the serious knee injury of German André ter Stegen. Szczesny had finished his training at Arsenal, which he joined in 2008. Loaned to Brentford in 2009-2010, he remained the ‘Gunners’ goalkeeper until 2015 and a new two-year loan, to AS Roma . Szczesny was recruited by Juventus in 2017 to succeed legend Gianluigi Buffon in the Turin goal.

Szczesny made 252 appearances for Juventus, winning three championships and three Italian Cups. His prize list also includes an FA Cup with Arsenal in 2015. He won the Goalkeeper of the Year award in the Premier League in 2014 and in Serie A in 2020. Szczesny has 84 appearances for the Polish national team, playing in the 2018 World Cups. and 2022 and the Euros 2012, 2016, 2020 and 2024.

Ter Stegen suffered a ruptured patella tendon in his right knee on September 22 during the victory at Villarreal and risks not being able to play again this season.
