Funimation Announces Purchase of Crunchyroll for 1 Billion Dollars

A Funimation, company arm of Sony, announced on Monday (9) the total purchase of the Crunchyroll, brand belonging to the American company AT&T. The value of the deal was US$ 1.175 billion. The negotiation took place since December 2020, but only now the purchase was completed.

Crunchyroll has over 5 million subscribers to the on demand service. It serves nearly 120 million registered users in over 200 countries and territories, offering mobile games, manga, event items and distribution.

According to Sony, the deal provides the opportunity for Crunchyroll and Funimation to expand distribution to their content partners and expand fan-centric offerings to consumers.

The companies have yet to release details about a possible merger of the streaming services or regarding changes in the current price of subscriptions.
