A fundraising campaign for two sisters from the Alblasserwaard who both lost their husbands to a canoe accident in France last month has already raised more than 100,000 euros after just over a day.
The fundraiser was set up by Lois Blokland, a sister of the two sisters who were widowed after the accident. The money is intended to support the sisters financially after the accident.
“By the end of the morning on Thursday, I put it (the fundraising campaign, ed.) online,” Blokland says. Rijnmond. “We never dared to hope that so much money has already been collected.”
The two men who died in the canoe accident were 33 and 25 years old. It is still unclear how the accident happened. The part of the canal they sailed on at Mathaux would be considered dangerous. The group in which the men were there ended up in whirlpools at a place where a water suction pipe runs.
The first victim was quickly pulled out of the water, but help was of no avail. The second man was later found and found dead.
Lots of comments on social media
In addition to the women, the men leave a total of four children. Also, one of the widows is currently pregnant with twins. “They are both very strong,” says Blokland about how her sisters are doing now.
The action has been widely shared on social media. “We come from a large family. My parents have sixteen children. We have shared the action with family, asking if they want to share it on social media.”
