Doctors who conduct research and work close to the patient at the same time are called clinician scientists. They are essential performers when it comes to bringing scientific findings from the laboratory to the bedside and back.
However, the work of clinician scientists is often perceived as unattractive, since the simultaneity of research and medical treatment leads to a considerable additional burden and also makes it difficult to combine family and work. In addition, there are (too) few career prospects and target positions for them at the moment.
In order to improve the situation of clinician scientists who are already advanced in their careers, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) is funding programs nationwide that create better framework conditions for scientifically active specialists at university hospitals.

In a highly competitive selection process among 29 applicants, the advanced clinician scientist program “Interact” – Interfaces in translational Research “of the Würzburg University Medicine was able to qualify as one of eight German university locations for funding.
The funding application was submitted by Prof. Dr. Stefanie Hahner, Vice Dean for the Promotion of Young Talent and Women, and Prof. Dr. Matthias Frosch, Dean of the Medical Faculty of the University of Würzburg and Prof. Dr. Nicolas Schlegel and Prof. Dr. Matthias Goebeler from the Interdisciplinary Center for Clinical Research (IZKF) Würzburg. Prof. Hahner explains: “In a structured multi-year program, Interact offers specialists protected time for research as well as clear career paths that lead to various professional target positions such as professorships”.

In addition, the program attaches great importance to equality, transparent admission requirements, the compatibility of work and family as well as national scientific networking.

“Interact is an important building block for the promotion of young people in medical research at the Medical Faculty and the University Hospital of Würzburg – and fits seamlessly into the series of clinician-scientist programs already established at the Medical Faculty,” emphasizes Prof. Frosch.
43 Clinician Scientists and four Advanced Clinician Scientists are currently being funded in structured programs at the University Hospital of Würzburg.
The BMBF funding now promised to the Würzburg University Medicine has an annual volume of 1.5 million euros – and that for the next five years.
In this way, according to a press release, advanced clinician scientists can be supported with personnel, material and travel costs as well as through targeted career advancement measures. uni
